Outer Banks Hydrology Management and Stormwater Education Series

The UNC Coastal Studies Institute is planning a series of educational workshops following the report of findings by the Outer Banks Hydrology Management Committee.  Created by Senator Basnight after increasing concern over the impacts of stormwater, the Outer Banks Hydrology Management Committee was challenged to make recommendations that address the issues surrounding hydrology and stormwater management on the Outer Banks.  The education workshops scheduled this upcoming year will support the findings and recommendations of the committee.   Focusing on a variety of audiences, each of the workshops will tackle issues and potential solutions to hydrology and stormwater management on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. 
 
In partnership with the Dare County League of Women Voters, the UNC Coastal Studies Institute hosted the first workshop on hydrology and stormwater education on January 26th, from 7-9pm at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. This first of four education workshops throughout 2006 began with a public forum focusing on the report of findings by the Outer Banks Hydrology Management Committee.  This program also covered the committee’s recommendations and examples of resources and solutions to stormwater management for the homeowner. 

Upcoming Hydrology Management and Stormwater Workshops

The Watershed Academy
June 15-16, 2006
The Sanderling Resort, Duck, NC

The Watershed Academy, an intensive three day workshop provided in conjunction with NCSU Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, is scheduled to take place on June 15 -16.  The Watershed Academy will give participants a better understanding of the issues and problems related to watershed land use, stormwater and water quality.  A variety of field trips will be taken to sites that demonstrate the use of an assortment of stormwater management techniques and tools.

Low Impact Development (LID) Workshop
Final Date and Location TBA

A one day Low impact Development (LID) workshop is planned for September, 2006.  This educational seminar will spotlight the results of an assessment of coastal environmental conditions and existing stormwater management strategies.  Discussion of Low Impact Development techniques for local communities and the upcoming LID manual will be included as well.
