Photo Log of Southern Ocean Research Cruise

Date: April 28, 2009
Time: 6:30-7:30pm
Location:  Jockey's Ridge State Park Auditorium

Dr. Richard L. Miller of the UNC Coastal Studies Institute (UNC-CSI)
will present “In Quest of High Seas: A photo log of a research cruise to the Southern Ocean” From 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Jockey’s Ridge State Park Auditorium on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Dr. Miller will present an overview of the project and a photo essay documenting the details of the trip.

In February of 2008, a group of 30 scientists from over a dozen institutions embarked on a 42 day cruise to take part in the Southern Ocean Gas Exchange experiment, known as GasEX III. GasEX III was a project designed to explain how large amounts of ”greenhouse” gases move between the atmosphere and sea. Surrounding Antarctica and extending north to 60 degrees latitude, the Southern Ocean comprises approximately 30 percent of the surface area of the global seas. The high winds and large seas of the Southern Ocean may not make for a comfortable cruise, but are ideal for the study of the exchange of
gases. Understanding the factors that control the flux of greenhouse gases between the ocean and the atmosphere is critical to understanding our global system. “This is a global project that has direct local implications for all of us,” states Dr. Richard Miller, UNC-CSI Program Head and contributing GasEX III scientist.
