Students will gather data from physical clues.  Students will learn to form hypotheses based on observed data.  Students will map a mock underwater archaeological site.  Students will discuss the importance of preserving shipwrecks intact.  Students will use the data gathered to develop evidence

 6-8 Exploring Maritime History: "Monitor" and "Hunley" This lesson will focus on our maritime heritage by having students explore the shipwrecks of the Monitor and Thunder Bay national marine sanctuaries. Students will explore the history of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary through video footage and an interview
 6-8 Pirate Archaeology This lesson reviews students' understanding of where where pirates worked and what their motivations were. It asks students to consider where they might look for sunken pirate ships and what they would expect to find on such ships. Students will pretend to be historians seeking funding for expeditions to search for pirate ships and write up their plans.
 8 Early NC Exploration Students will focus on the European perspective of exploration  and findings along the North Carolina coast.  Write down their impressions of the original inhabitants of NC.
