Research Interests 
Mike coordinates field research activities across program areas for CSI from the satellite lab located in Nags Head. He also expands and maintains the observing equipment for the northeastern region (NC-COOS) of the South East Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System (SEA-COOS).

He has contributed to many research partnerships with organizations and businesses. At the Army Corps Of Engineers Field Research Facility in Duck Mike operates a Coastal Ocean Radar (CODAR). He works with Kent Hathaway at the FRF to expand the observing system at Jennettes Pier (JPOP) along with the Outer Banks Boarding company (OBBC), Surfchex, and the NC Aquarium Society. Mike has worked on many projects with Josh Kohut and Hugh Roarty at Rutgers University. He has helped John Moisan at NASA to site several CODAR systems along with Mark Bushnell at NOAA. Mike has has worked to help provide the U.S Coast Guard with information to contribute to search and rescue efforts utilizing ocean observing data. Mike teaches classes at the College of the Albemarle’s Dare County Campus. He is a Surfrider Foundation member, and is working on a collaborative erosion forum between CSI and Surfrider

 He holds SCUBA certifications with the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) and the American Association of Underwater Scientists (AAUS). He is a US Coast Guard licensed OUPV (Operator of Un-inspected Passenger Vessel) Captain.

Personal Interests
Mike loves his family, the ocean, and the study of Nature.  Mike’s family is his biggest interest, followed closely by his love for the ocean. He has a three and a half year old son,  an intelliegnt and beautiful wife, and some terrific parents.   Mike is a surf junkie, saltwater fisherman and free diver. His wheels turn on nonlinear dynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics, and any other scientific news of the weird.
