Bio
Robert McClendon joined the UNC Coastal Studies Institute to provide design solutions to coastal environmental issues and to offer sustainable community design assistance. Prior to working in the field of landscape architecture and environmental design, Robert worked for municipal and higher education clients managing software development and implementation projects. Robert has knowledge and experience in all aspects of municipal and higher education operations and business processes.

- Stormwater management recommendations for the Town of Southern Shores.
- Site assessment for Dare County affordable housing development on Roanoke Island.
- Site design for the Bowsertown Landfill redevelopment project in Manteo.
- Watershed assessment and design recommendations for solutions to water quality issues associated with the Outer Banks ocean outfalls.
- Design for rain gardens, constructed wetlands and trails for Kitty Hawk Woods shoreline restoration project.
- Low Impact Development (LID) recommendations for counties and municipalities in northeastern North Carolina.
Research Interests

- Using Sustainable Community Design processes to assist communities with determining land use, zoning, and economic development goals and providing design assistance for environmentally sensitive sustainable development based on the goals identified by the community.
- Promoting the use of native plants in landscape plans to manage stormwater and encourage an increase in wildlife habitat and diversity.
- Determining how developers can use LID principles without the economic risk associated with changing development methods.
